Where should you sit?

Well it seems from our poll last week that almost everyone likes to site opposite their date - 76%. I suppose that is because you can see them an focus your attention on them. However, psychologists tell us if you sit opposite someone it means that the table is a barrier between you, and people may become competitive and defensive when seated across from each other.

If you have a choice, like in a restaurant, sit in the corner position or ask for a booth. Don't set up a competitive situation unnecessarily. It can hamper an otherwise potentially positive relationship building situation.
When seated in the competitive position, a person also becomes defensive about his/her personal territory (or half of the table). Don't accidentally push items into someone else's space, as it is as much an invasion at dinner as if you had reached into their space and touched them - unless of course you want to! Ahh what do psychologists know anyway!

This weeks poll is about what you find most attractive about people - It's all about the smile for me.

Congratulations to Miles for winning last weeks comment of the week. I look forward to reading this weeks comments - remember the best comment of the week wins a months free membership to MaybeFriends.com - Great People. Great Friends. Great Dates.

Flirting makes the world go round....

We introduced the "send a flirt" option on Friday last week and since then over 2,000 flirts have been sent on the site - in 5 days! That's an awful lot of flirting going on and it's great to see. All relationships have to start with some kind of flirting and I'm delighted that so many of you are using this feature on the site.

Speaking of Flirting, there is an article in the Irish Independent today and it is an interview with MaybeFriends.com's very own Date Doctor - Dave Kavanagh. - Check it out - it makes for great reading.... Is your flirting a disaster?

I'm not sure how many of you have seen our "Flirt Cards" but here are the MaybeFriends.com flirting tips:
  • When you see someone you fancy get caught glancing at them
  • Learn to listen - you'll be irresistible
  • Ask potential dates about themselves - they'll love you for it
  • Look your best - you never know when you'll meet "The One"
  • Girls - If you want to be treated like a lady Act like one!
  • Boys - Sport is fine but have other topics to talk about too.

Let us know if you have any other flirting tips - best comment of the week wins a months free membership to MaybeFriends.com - Great People. Great Friends. Great Dates.

Kissing in Public.

Hi, don't know if many of you saw the interview in the Sunday World with Jen and Tim on Sunday - they're the 80th couple to get married from the site. They looked fab and the very best of luck to them on their big day.

Congratulations to Tazzie for winning last weeks best comment on age gaps - a months free membership for her.

The poll last week was about snogging in public and it seems our members are well up for it with 73% of you agreeing that it is "always" OK to kiss in public. Well maybe you like doing it, but ....there is nothing worse than being beside people who are snogging while you're say, standing at a bus stop or something. I don't know where to look and I spend the time just wishing the bus would come along so I can get away from them!

This weeks poll is about where you sit in relation to your date. Do you like to sit side by side or opposite or do you care? I better check up on the psychology of the positions - I'm sure they mean different things about you but I know that I'd always prefer to sit opposite someone, dating or not, as I like to look at people I'm talking with and find it difficult to do this when I'm sitting side by side without looking ridiculous.

I look forward to reading your comments this week. Remember best comment of the week wins a months free membership on MaybeFriends.com - Great People. Great Friends. Great Dates.

More on age gaps.....

There have been a few comments on the blog lately about men not being interested in women over 40. I have to disagree with this. I think that men don't have nearly the same outlook on age as women do.
Sure younger women are better looking and more attractive for men to look at but that's nature. I think that men in their 40's are more than happy to date women in their 20's, 30's and 40's - age is not an issue to them it's more about compatibility than the trophy on the arm and I think as men get older they realise this more and more.
It's like when you see that amazing dress and you just have to try it on but when you do it doesn't do you any justice - it's the same with men - they might see an attractive young woman but when they start chatting to her they realise that they are just not on the same wave-lenght. Of course you are always going to get some men who opt for looks only, just as you will find women who opt for the same or worse still the size of the bank balance. But in general I think that men and women just want someone they can be themselves with, have a good laugh with and be proud to be with.
What do you think? come on guys give us your version of this - I am really naive?

Age Gaps

Following last weeks poll 47% of you think the most acceptable age gap is 5-10 years - 30% of you are romantics, believing that it doesn't really matter as long as you're in love! I think the 5-10 year gap is about the most acceptable although it does depend on what age you are. So a 20 year old with a 30 year old are generally miles apart but a 40 year old and 50 year old are really not that different so I do think the age thing matters less and less the older you get.

This week's poll is about Public Displays of Affection - is it ok to snog in public?

Don't forget about the Dublin Meet and Greet in Searson's in Baggot St. on Thursday. I'm really looking forward to meeting lots of you there - old and new for a couple of drinks and a laugh.

We started our new radio ads today so have a listen out for them - hope you enjoy them!

Congratulations to Jemimapuddleduck who is last week's winner for best comment.

Flirting Guy Style

Some guys are very obvious about flirting - they make life easy for you - they follow the age old pattern of; Looking at you. Smiling at you. Approaching you. Talking to you. Looking at your lips while they talk to you, and then, hey presto, off the two of you go in to the sunset...........
But lots of guys get a bit mixed up over the whole flirting thing; They ignore you. You think they are looking at you but can never catch them. They poke you, pull your hair. Talk to all your friends but not you - ohhhh why can't they just overcome their shyness and play it straight?
How's a girl to know that the guy who is being unbelievably rude to her actually fancies her? Well watch him, if his behaviour is different to you than to everyone else then 9 times out of 10 it's because he actually fancies you. On line is slightly easier but they can still be short in their emails, not answer you for a few days etc. However, a lot of the time they are worth having a little patience for, as when eventually you both get to have a normal conversation, they will come out of their shell and amaze you with their wonderful personality and wit. So hang on in there girls it will be worth the effort.
Let me know what you think. Girls which type of flirter would you prefer? Guys which type of flirter are you?

If they don't call then they don't want to call

The results of last week's poll are in. We asked you why you don't call someone when they have given you their number. Well we all know it, even though we don't like to think it, but if they don't call it's because they didn't want to (66%) - damn it, I was sure all those guys were just unfortunate to lose my number!
Although we can comfort ourselves that 20% don't have the courage to call - if you are one of those 20% then think of this - if they didn't want you to call they wouldn't have given you their number so go on and call otherwise they'll think you didn't want to.

Congratulations to SingleDad who won the months free membership this week for his comment on flirting.

This week's poll is about age gaps - what is acceptable? I look forward to seeing the results on that one and any comments you have on last weeks poll.

Dating Disasters

What's the worst date you've ever been on? We want to hear about your disasters - bringing someone wonderful to dinner and then not having your wallet. Doing something really embarrassing when you are trying to impress someone - Share it with us and lets see who's got the worst story.
I heard of a girl once who went out with a guy I know, to a Chinese restaurant for dinner. There she was trying to impress this guy who she had fancied for ages. When the waiter came along after the starter with the hot cloth to clean your hands with, she mistakenly thought it was some type of bread and tried to eat it!!! Can you imagine the reddner she had.

Get shopping....

It appears from last weeks poll that it is all about dress sense. It is not so important that you are good looking but you must present yourself at your very best. - Well that's as good an excuse as you are going to get to go on a shopping spree so enjoy it!
The final results of the poll were 81% would prefer someone who was average looking but well dressed and just 19% would prefer someone good looking but badly dressed.
This week's poll is all about the truth - if you don't call someone what is the real reason. I think I know the answer to this one but lets wait and see, we might be pleasantly surprised.

Last Saturday night's party went really well and don't forget that the singles night is on in the Viper Rooms this Friday night so get yourselves down to what is always a great night out.

Congratulations to Toffee she won the months free membership for her fantastic contributions to the Chat-up lines blog last week.
